| The final match of the
season saw Walthamstow competing at home for the second time this season.
With local rivals Enfield and Haringey, and the second placed team in the
league Watford in the match it was always going to be a difficult
competition made more difficult by not having multi-eventer Rob Pattison
for the first time this season.
Trevor Sloman as usual covered a huge number of events, starting with second in the Pole Vault and Long Jump, third in the Shot, 110 metre hurdles, and High Jump and finishing the day with a second in the Discus and as the final leg runner in the victorious 4x400 metre relay team. The rest of the relay team in the 4 x 400 was Ray Middleton; Andrew Masella; and Dey Wilson. Ray had begun the day with the 400 Hurdles, following it with the ‘B’ 800 metres, 200 metres, and both of the relays. In the sprints Andrew Masella ran the individual ‘A’ string 400 metres also running both relays and competing in the Long Jump. Geoff Moon put in another valuable contribution in the ‘B’ string 100 and 200 metres, 4 x 100 relay and ‘B’ string shot put. Noor Ali made his debut competing for the club with a brave run in the ‘B’ string 400 metres. Dey Wilson ran his fastest 800 metres of the season in the ‘A’ string race for a third place. Roger Attwood sadly injured was only able to run in the ‘B’ string of the 400 metre hurdles before being forced to withdraw from the Triple Jump. Our only individual win of the day came in the Javelin with Pieter Schoenman winning the ‘A’ string Javelin in a new club record of 56.03. The ‘B’ string Javelin saw Richie McDowell get a valuable second, with a third place in the ‘B’ Discus, Richie also running in the individual 100m and the shorter relay. In the distance events Steve Surridge ran a seasons best of 16:55.7 for a second place in the ‘A’ string 5000 metres, with team manager Dave Humm running 18:25.3 for second in the ‘B’ string after starting too quickly. Dave also ran the ‘B’ string steeplechase to earn a third place, after having competed in the Hammer throw and Triple Jump in the field. Natu Tesfia ran a swift 4:09.4 for second place in the ‘A’ string 1,500 metres, Roger Berry running the ‘B’ string 1,500 metres and ‘A’ string steeplechase for two third places. Watford finished the match as winners on 146 points; Enfield and Haringey second on 113; West Norfolk, third 106; Walthamstow, fourth 89; and Invicta East Kent, fifth 51. Thanks go to Dave Humm for the reports and results. Thanks go to everyone who has turned up to officiate as well as compete! Overall, I would say the season was a good one. Though we did not finish particularly high in the League, all the matches had plenty of competitors from all Clubs and we had a lot of new faces with a good team spirit. Lets hope that all the Club members, new and old, all winter well for next summer! |
