For the final match of the Southern League Season, Walthamstow AC were hosts to Victoria Park Harriers, Kent AC, Harlow, and Tunbridge Wells & Langton, before this match being, first, second, fourth, and seventeenth place respectively in the League. This match was to be the title decider for this season.
Walthamstow AC had their toughest competition of the season and it showed in relatively low placings in some of the events.
James Obili made a brilliant debut at the individual 400m running 53.4 to earn second place, having earlier run a seasons best 11.9 in the 100m, but the level of competition was shown by this only earning fifth place. James and his brother made up the 4x100 relay team along with Paul Milsom and Trevor Sloman. Paul also ran the ‘B’ string 100m, 200m, 400m, and a leg of the 4x400m relay.
As usual Trevor Sloman was busy with other events winning the 400m hurdles in a seasons best 59.8, third in the 110m hurdles, and in the field getting second places in the ‘A’ string High Jump and Javelin, with a fourth in the ‘A’ long jump, and in the ‘B’ string second in the Discus and fourth in the Shot.
Our other multi eventer Rob Pattison was third in the ‘B’ string 5000m, with a second place in the ‘B’ High Jump, and fourth in the ‘A’ Pole Vault. Rob also earned fifth places in the ‘A’ Hammer Throw, and the ‘B’ Long Jump.
In the middle distance events Dey Wilson got third in the 800m, with a fourth in the 1,500m , fifth in the 200m, and finished with a leg of the 4x400m relay. Ray Middleton ran a seasons best in the ‘B’ 800m and the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay, taking the baton from Trevor Sloman. Team manger Dave Humm took a break from timekeeping duties to get a third in the ‘B’ 1,500m, and fifth in the ‘A’ triple jump.
In the longer distance events Danny Rose ran a seasons best in the 5,000m for third in the ‘A’ string, with Roger Attwood and Steve Surridge getting fourth place in the ‘A’, and ‘B’ string Steeplechase in the highest quality field in these events for the season.
Roger had started the day with a fifth in the ‘B’ Hammer and 400m hurdles, and fourth in the triple jump.
The final match result was a win for Kent AC making them Division 4 East champions with Victoria Park second, Harlow third, Tunbridge Wells fourth, and Walthamstow fifth.
