| The Walthamstow team
continued their Southern League season with a match at Bromley in blazing
sunshine for the first time this year. Calvin Chance made his debut at
competing for the club, running the fastest 100 metres time by any of the
club’s sprinters this year in a good quality race, also competing in the
200 metres, long jump and 4 x 100 relay. Our regular sprinters Andrew
Masella and Geoff Moon also competed. Andrew ran the 200 metres in a
season’s best time, running the 400 metres and legs in both relays, also
competing in the long jump. Geoff began the day with the Shot Put, then
competing in the 100 metres, Javelin, Discus, and ran a leg of the 4 x 100
metre relay.
Our veteran athletes made a vital contribution with Ray Middleton running the 400 metres, 400 Hurdles, and both relays. Roger Attwood running the ‘B’ string of the 400 Hurdles, and Steeplechase, triple jumping, and throwing the Hammer. Steve Surridge got his fastest time as a veteran in the 1,500 metres to earn second place in the ‘A’ string, with Roger Berry getting second places in both the ‘B’ 1,500 m and ‘A’ Steeplechase. Danny Rose ran a seasons best for second in the ‘A’ string 5,000 metres, far ahead of team manager Dave Humm in the ‘B’ string, but Dave’s efforts were rewarded with another second place to go with that from the ‘B’ 800 metres. Dave also competed in the Triple Jump and Discus. Rob Pattison had another busy day with second places in the ‘A’ string Shot Put, and 800 metres, with third places in the Hammer and High Jump, and a fourth in the Javelin. We were left wishing Trevor Sloman and Natu Tesfia, both unable to compete due to illness, make a swift recovery and also the 'silver streaker' Mr Dw also gets back soon. The overall match result was a disappointing fourth place for the ‘Stow, with the hosts Blackheath winning, Tunbridge Wells and Langton second, Barnet third, and Dartford fifth. Clive Ridley easily won the 'getting lost' award. For a grown up he showed he has not lost the careful, thoughtful, planned out manner he displayed during his years of training and coaching. He covered the whole of South London needing two refuelling stops before stumbling upon Norman Park, thats what I call commitment to the Club! |
