| Walthamstow AC finished
a solid third place in the Southern League match at Ware on Saturday,
behind winners Brighton, and host club Harlow. The match scores were
Brighton 136, Harlow 130, Walthamstow 120, Paddock Wood 97, and St Albans 33. Natu Tesfia made his 5000m debut for the club with a win in the ‘A’ string in an untroubled 15 minutes 29 second, also winning the ‘A’ 3000m Steeplechase. Danny Rose, for once running the ‘B’ string in the 5000 metres, also won, with Roger Attwood getting third as the ‘B’ string steeplechase. Roger having previously got fourth places in the ‘B’ Hammer, 400m Hurdles, and Triple Jump to earn vital points for the club. Trevor Sloman won the ‘A’ string High Jump, with second places in the Pole Vault, Discus, Javelin, and 110m Hurdles, rounding out the day with the Long Jump, Shot Put, second place in the ‘B’ 100 metres, and both relays. Andrew Masella also had a busy day winning the ‘B’ string Long Jump, with third in the ‘A’ string 100 metres, also running the ‘A’ string 200 and 400 metres, with legs in both of the 4 x 100 metres and 4 x 400 metres relays. Richie McDowell had a successful day with second places in the ‘B’ string of the Discus and Javelin throws, third in the 200 metres and the 4 x 100 metre relay quartet. Rob Pattison had a relatively quiet day with wins in the ‘B’ string Pole Vault and High Jump, second place in the ‘A’ 800 metres and ‘B’ Shot Put, and a third in the ‘A’ Hammer throw. In the middle distances Dey Wilson made his 800m debut for the season with a third place in the ‘B’ string, also running a leg of the 4x 400 metre relay. For the 1,500 metre runners third places were the order of the day, with Steve Surridge and Dave Humm running the ‘A’ and ‘B’ strings respectively. Dave also getting a seasons best in the Triple Jump. Ray Middleton maintained his consistent form in the 400 metres for second in the ‘B’ string 400 metres, with the 400m hurdles and both relay events going to make up his day. {By Dave Humm}. Once again plenty of club members attending the match, meant a good team spirit with plenty of albeit 'cutting edge' supportive comments. This made the day very enjoyable. PS To any 5000m runners about to lose their club No1 status, be prepared, as No2, your running gear just gets left and you lose access to the prized Richie 'Fred Astaire' McDowell fold up chair! Mind you not even World Record holders would get a foot in the Dey Wilson designer tent. {By DR} |
