Walthamstow 8th June 2002

Walthamstow AC maintained their string of second places at the first home match of the season, finishing with 123 behind Chelmsford on 149 points, Ashford were third on 108, Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets fourth 101.5, and Dacorum and Tring fifth with 47.5.

The club’s newcomers made a big contribution, with Natu Tesfia winning the ‘A’ string of the 1,500 metres and Steeplechase, and running a leg of the 400 metres relay. Geoff Moon showed typical Aussie spirit by getting second place in the ‘B’ string 100m, 200m, and 110m hurdles, rounding out the day by running legs of both relays. Our other newcomer Pieter Schoenman only competed in the Javelin, but won the ‘A’ string with a new Club record of 55metres 79cm.

Andrew Masella came second in the ‘A’ string 400m, and gained fourth in the 200 metres, having to miss the relays due to a stomach problem. In the ‘B’ string 400m County medal winner Ray Middleton won in a steady 57.2 seconds, and also ran in both relays. Richie McDowell won the ‘B’ string Javelin and came third in the ‘A’ 100 metres. In the two relays we came second in the 4 x 100 metres and a desperately close third in the 4 x 400 metres, with Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets finishing less than a metre ahead.

Multi eventers Rob Pattison and Trevor Sloman had a relatively quiet day competing in six and eight events respectively. Trevor had wins in the ‘A’ string Pole Vault and High Jump, with second places in both the 110m and 400m hurdles, and the Triple Jump, with a fifth in a very competitive Shot Put. Rob won the ‘B’ string Pole Vault, with second places in the ‘A’ 800m, and ‘B’ High Jump, with third in the Hammer, Shot, and Discus.

The distance events saw Danny Rose and Roger Berry get third and fourth respectively in the two strings of the 5,000 metres against a good quality field. Dey Wilson continued his comeback from injury with a personal best in winning the ‘B’ string 1,500 m and a leg of the 4 x 400 metre relay.

Club treasurer Roger Attwood made a big contribution competing in the ‘B’ string Steeplechase, 400m Hurdles and Hammer throw, as well as trying to keep the meeting running. Team manager Dave Humm managed a second in the ‘B’ string of the 800m, also competing in the Triple Jump.

With Maureen and Brian having a poor excuse { their wedding or something ??} and Arthur hospitalised {get well soon} the day was run by Eton Manor officials plus other helpers, so a big thanks to them all.

All in all with the evenings party, the new faces and the old faces, it was good day for the club in all areas and it rained only once !
