A slightly depleted team from Walthamstow AC put in a spirited performance to get second place in the Southern league match at Colchester, behind the host club. Scores in order were Colchester Harriers 146; Walthamstow 130; Horsham Blue Star 124; and Bexley 88, Eastbourne Rovers failed to appear. As usual Rob Pattison and Trevor Sloman were the mainstays of the team, particularly in the field, but several other athletes had busy days as well, including Roger Attwood and Richie McDowell. Trevor won the 'A' String Pole Vault, 110m Hurdles, and 400m Hurdles, with second places in the Discus and High Jump, rounding out the day by also competing in both relays together with the Javelin, Shot, and Long Jump. Rob began the day with the Hammer throw, before moving on to wins in the 'B' string Pole Vault, High Jump, and 110m Hurdles, and second places in the 'A' 800metres, 'B' Long Jump and Shot Put, finishing the day off with the Discus and the two relays. Richie McDowell won the 'B' Javelin, with a second place in the 200 metres, and also competed in the 100 metres, and both relays. Roger Attwood scored valuable points with second in the 'A' Steeplechase, third in the 400metres and 400m Hurdles, and fourth places in the Triple Jump and Hammer. Team manager Dave Humm led by example with second places in the 'B' string 800 metres, 5000 metres, and 3000m Steeplechase, rounding off a busy day with fourth places in the 400 metres and Triple Jump. In the other distance events Danny Rose ran a seasons best time in the 5000 metres for a strong second place behind Colchester's international cross country runner Adrian Musset { 14:38 } and also got a second in the 'B' 1,500m. Dey Wilson ran a personal best to get second in the 'A' 1,500 despite a sore foot. In the sprints Andrew Masella ran the 'A' string 100 and 200 metres also being part of the quartet which got third in the 4 x 100 relay and second in the 4 x 400 relay. Getting Second place in this match has left the club well placed for their home match at Walthamstow on the 8th June, when we hope to have our County medallists back competing. The highlight of the day, were the Cornish pasties in the 'Rose' families picnic. Roger Attwood showed his class in the food research field by giving a detailed explanation of how Cornish tin miners dirty hands led to the classic pasty shape being created. It is amazing what an athlete will do to get a pasty, however by popular opinion, it was decided that for Rogers future steeplechase performances, it would be better if he missed out tasting one. Tough luck Rog !! |
