Match Report by Dave Humm.

Newly promoted Walthamstow AC continued their encouraging start to the track season in Division 4 East of the Southern Mens League by placing second in the match at Ware.

So far most of the clubs that we have beaten were previously at least one division higher, due to division 4 and 5 having been merged and regionalised.

Trevor Sloman continued to score large numbers of points securing wins in the ‘A’ string Pole Vault and 400m Hurdles, with second places in the 100m, 110m Hurdles, and Long Jump. Trevor also won the ‘B’ string Shot, and Discus and ran in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays. Our other multi eventer Rob Pattison won the ‘B’ string 110m and 400m Hurdles, Pole Vault, picking up second in the 800m and High Jump, and running in both relays.

Two members making a welcome return to Southern League competition were Steve Surridge, earning second place in the ‘B’ 5000m, and Belho Atek in the heavy throws. Belho picked up valuable points in the ‘A’ string Hammer, Shot and Discus, being unlucky not to break 10 meters in the shot with a best put of 9.98m, and getting second place in both the Shot and Discus.

Dey Wilson and Ray Middleton combined to cover the longer sprints, with Dey running the 200m, 400m, 800m and both relays in the ‘A’ string, and Ray running the 200, 400, and the 4 x 400m relay for the ‘B’ string. Ben Shadbolt picked up third in the ‘B’ Javelin and ran a leg of the 4 x 100 relay.

The long distance events were covered by Danny Rose, second in the ‘A’ 5000m, Roger Attwood, 3rd in the ‘A’ Steeplechase and Roger Berry 2nd in the ‘B’ 1,500m. Team manager Dave Humm picked up points with a 4th in the ‘A’ 1,500m and second in the ‘B’ string Steeplechase.

The final result was a win for Highgate with 138.5 points; second Walthamstow, 124; third Ashford, 100.5; fourth host club Hertford and Ware 91, and fifth Invicta East Kent.
