Match Report by Dave Humm.
Walthamstow AC started their Southern League season with an encouraging second place at Dartford, only two and and a half points behind Eastbourne. A superb effort by all nine athletes competing gave nearly the best possible start for the newly promoted team, showing that with a stronger team available that promotion would not be out of reach.
In the field events Trevor Sloman and Rob Pattison both scored vital points, particularly in the Pole Vault and High Jump. On the track Dey Wilson, John Milsom, and Ray Middleton all picked up valuable points while covering several events. Danny Rose, Roger Attwood, and Dave Humm scored well in the longer distances, with Danny winning the 5,000 metre race ahead of the Division 2 runners.
The overall match was one of the closest possible in the league with only 10.5 points separating all five teams. The match result was Eastbourne first with 112.5 points; Walthamstow second on 110; Dartford third on 102.5 points; and Barnet tied with Blackheath for fourth on 102 points.
The next match is at Ware on Saturday 2 June.
