Walthamstow AC Middle/Distance Training by Clive Ridley
|
From our beginnings as a "Harriers Club" we have had a strong tradition of both Middle and long distance running. Over the years our members have produced good club-level performances over distances from 800 metres up to the Marathon and ultra- long distances such as The London to Brighton run. We have also had some success at National level, with members gaining county and international selection. As far as coaching is concerned our approach is flexible: some runners prefer to plan their own programmes, others want coaching with detailed training plans and some just want occasional advice. I have been involved in coaching and advising some of these athletes for the past 25 years or so. In coming into contact with so many athletes over this period as both a coach and former runner, it has become apparent to me that there are ways many of achieving the same goals using differing training methods. Runners come in different shapes and sizes and with varying personalities and lifestyles. Training programmes, therefore, need to reflect these differences and be tailored to individual needs. As far as training facilities are concerned we are fortunate in having access locally to almost everything the middle/distance runner requires: # Epping Forest with its many varying types of terrain. # Road runs on good well-lit pavements. #An eight-lane All - Weather floodlight track. # Two excellent areas for grass interval sessions, Highams Park and Low Hall Farm. Our members meet regularly to train together at Highams Park and Walthamstow track. New members or visiting runners are always welcome at these sessions.
