Chingford League Road
Relay 13/09/03, Highams Park
The team managed their best position in a Chingford League fixture for many moons by coming second. Debutante Colin Read was the hero of the day, first race, taking over in second, he kept it going to record an amazing 13.20. The rest of the squad ran very similar times in the fantastic afternoon sunshine. Danny had to sprint like a madman to hold onto second place, a spectacle which the spectators enjoyed much more than Danny. The B team of Dave Humm, Terry Wellard and Roger Attwood also made a good effort. |

5Km road race 7/10/03
Walthamstow Club members responded well to the call to compete with 16 starters out of a field of 228. Only 4 out of the 6 man relay team made the start, but they were well supported by Roger Berry and Abraham. Rob started well and only got overhauled by Danny over the last half lap with Dey and Steve closing in. Only 11 seconds covered Walthamstows leading 4 runners! The next race should be as close, any combination possible! Despite scoring only 158 points for the 6 runners, the Club was 5th. Perhaps this shows how the top runners are spread amongst only 5 or 6 clubs out of the League members. The 'B' team were 7th and the Vets 4th which shows it was a good turnout for the Club. The Flowerpot Pub in Wood Street was visited as tradition dictated - to cap the night off. |

Loughton 6 mile cross-country 18/10/03 The Club maintained its tremendous start to the season with another great turnout of 16 runners. The River Roding course was bone dry and therefore very fast. The course was 2.5 large grass laps then 3 field laps giving a course in excess of 6 miles. The 'A' team closed with Colin Read in a magnificent 41st in his first cross-country race, just behind super vet Roger Berry in 37th. Rob managed his first top ten finish in many years with Dey and Steve battling it out to be 23rd+24th. Team results are 3rd for the 'A' +'B' team. Another good day for the Club, roll on the next Eastway! Bob Littlewood had to retire injured from the race, we all wish you well. |

5Km road race 7/10/03
A calm, mild, moonlit night greeted Walthamstows finest. The large squad which trains together every Tuesday at the track had finally reached their High Noon, Rocky15, Live & Let Die,,,,,,where all the training, nuturing, drinking & eating would finally be exposed to each other and the world. Anyway, Nick on his debut ran a blinder for 7th, literally falling over the line to hold off Danny. Rob ran evenly to finish strongly in 11th, Dey showed he can run better when not pi**ed the night before, Steve kept it going for the squad with a calf pull for 21st and Colin 'mackeral/fried eggs' Read managed a superb 31st. The A team scoring only 93 points to get 2nd place behind Barnet. 19 Runners in all turned out,,,super!

| Hackney Marshes, 5
mile Cross Country, 13/12/03
The Chingford League made its first ever visit in recent times to the course created by Eton Manor. Hackney Marshes provided probably the flattest cross country course ever. The electricity pylons were probably the most striking visual highlight of the race. Murky rainy weather and the distance between course and changing rooms seemed to dampen the field size. Danny and Nick maintained their top ten positions, with Dey giving superb support in 13th. An injured Rob kept it going for the team with a heroic 26th, whilst Colin found out why spikes are needed at this time of year. With Steve Surridge and Roger Berry absent, Dave Humm took the opportunity to run well and close the 'A' team. Another 5 runners led by the rapidly improving Paul Walsh completed the team effort. The Club came 3rd with 155 points, well beaten by Barnet and Orion. The 'A' team need to score around the 100 mark to stand a chance of 2nd ahead of Orions vets.

| Chingford, 5
mile Cross Country, 17/01/04 The Chingford League visited Orion's home for the final cross country event. Orion chose the 'Eton Manor' 2 lap course for the race. Plenty of rain during the weeks preceding this race meant the going was a mixture of mud, water and slimey grass. Natu made the best start, but wearing trainers meant he soon dropped back when the mud got really severe. The Clubs 'youngsters' then got going, Colin, Nick, Dey and Danny all went to try and cling on to the leaders. Danny ran well and the long Warren Hill stretch was ideal for his elf-like physique, allowing him to get 3rd. Nick, Colin and Dey were all in sight of each other going round, with Colin 'mackeral' Read smashing his previous best position - Clives advice about swopping to whitebait obviously the difference! Roger gave Natu a stern 'talking to' going around, which meant with the two of them coming in close together, gave us 2nd place ahead of the hosts Orion. Paul Walsh once again ran well to lead the next 6 club runners home. If the team can perform again at Victoria Park and Eastway, then 2nd place in the League is an earth shattering possibility!

Park, 5
mile road race, 14/02/04
17 Walthamstow runners answered the call to compete in this race, always held at the same weekend each season. This leaves us old timers reflecting on the times that we have previously run for this course. Nick led the team home, breaking away from an 'under the weather' Danny Rose in the last 1/2 mile. Dey and Colin ran to form with Dey gaining revenge over Colin this time. Work and injuries have affected Steve Surridge and Roger Berry over recent weeks, reflected in their positions being well down on their usual high standards. This meant the 'A' team could only come 3rd on the day, behind Barnet and Orion. It was good to see so many old and new faces running for the Club still.

| Eastway Cycle Circuit,
5Km road race 3/03/04 A freezing cold night greeted the athletes turning out for the seasons final fixture. Nick and Dey both had inspired runs, smashing their PB's. Nick finishing superbly in 3rd and Dey showing growing confidence took 7th. An out of sorts Danny followed them home in 9th, with 'bladder boy' Colin doing well to come 13th after giving everyone a head start { how sporting }. Our sprinters Andrew and Ray completed the 'A' team, showing their summer speed build up is paying off. Another 8 runners did their stuff to give the Club another good 'B' team turnout. The Club came 3rd on the night, to finish 3rd overall for the season, which is our best for many, many years. Fielding our best 6 runners in good form would easily beat Orion and threaten Barnet, however injuries and other commitments took their toll. We really need another 2-3 top twenty runners, but we had great turnouts for nearly every match, so who knows who might be in the 'A' team next year?
