The first league fixture at the start of yet another winter season brought a reasonable result for the Club. I was not there so the following is completely made up. Dey ran better than expected, Rob, Ray & Mick ran as expected, Natu & Dave ran worse than expected. Steve Surridge & Danny Rose were missing as expected. The weather was the usual expected. In near perfect racing conditions a large field ran the first individual race of the season. Danny Rose and Rob Pattison stayed with the leaders till about half way. Rob then faded much better than Danny, but both held on to good opening positions. Dey ran well to finish close behind Rob. Dave, Mike & Ray all finished within 30 seconds of each other to close the 'A team. With Natu, Steve Surridge & Roger Berry all missing 5th team overall was a good effort. |

Loughton 19/10/02 Perfect conditions greeted the competitors, the sky was blue, the wind was gentle and the grass had been cut. A broken sewer presented almost the only environmental obstacle. The start was fast and Danny Rose accidentally out maneuvered the leading bunch to amazingly hit the front. He maintained this till he passed the clubs official photographer and then gave way politely to the 4 runners who would finish in front of him. Rob Pattison meanwhile was following in support closely studying the fashion cut of the field prior to launching his ‘Walthamstow winter haute – couture range’ at barrow boy prices. Dey Wilson was considering age and the meaning of life as he was under pressure from the clubs super vet Roger Berry who was storming around. Dave Humm was trying to work out how each pint of beer consumed just gravitates straight to the mid-riff. Ian Russel closed the scoring 6 with Roger Attwood and a returning Terry Wellard all giving support. Danny Rose 5th Rob Pattison 15th Dey Wilson 23rd Roger Berry 33rd {v55} Dave Humm 64th Ian Russel 105th {v50} Total 245 points Roger Attwood 122nd {v40} Terry Wellard 140th (v50}

The second Eastway fixture of the season happened with the spectacular and slightly surreal backdrop of East Londons Fireworks displays lighting the sky up in all directions. Not to be put off, Danny Rose led the leaders at the end of the first lap and only lost ground with a mile to go. He was rewarded with his best time for several years. The rest of the team fared less well with a 10km race 2 days before taking its toll { Walthamstow taking the team honours }. With star runners Natu, Steve 'vest or t-shirt?' Surridge and Dey 'silver streak' Wilson all missing the club could only manage 7th on the night. |

A large field with plenty of guest runners visited this famous course. The classic park, lake, park, lake then park course was slippery but manageable. Rob probably ran the best race of the day, but it was great to see Kieran and Terry both racing again. Thanks go to the organisers, marshalls and markers who all made the race a success. Guest runners should note however that financial reward has never played a part in the Chingford League, we are as amateur as you can get !*****

Once again a large field of runners attended with much stronger squads from Barnet and Heathside. The race was run on the 'Barnet' course over the traditional fields. Despite the course being very wet and cut up, the start was fast with Rob leading the Walthamstow effort. Danny got past Rob, when Rob had his usual sticky patch but it was close to the line. Steve Surridge ran well again and Jeff Fowler made a welcome return. It is fair to say that most runners had eaten a lot of 'pud' so were not really up for running in it!

Overnight snow, then rain, then slush all disappeared in time for this popular fixture. Cold but bright sunny weather greeted the runners over the traditional 2 lap course. Danny Rose's secret training program, designed in response to the threat of the Ridley worshipping track group { motto- 'another lap master ?' } seemed to pay off as he ran well with the leaders to finish 5th. Danny actually remembering the training will be another issue however. Rob ran well to 'do' his predicted time and Dey, the skiing playboy of the club showed good form despite being on the 'piste' { not sure of the spelling! }all week. Roger Berry ran very well again and a debutante, Ian, got a taste of the League. It was good to see Ray back after injury and the Ridleyites will be praying for everyone else.

For the final fixture of the winter League season, Dey and Roger had the best of the evening. Danny, Rob and Steve ran well below their expectations. Dey's recent training paid off, showing the some of the potential of his natural talent. Roger once again ran superbly for his age group. Overall a poor season for the club, too many key members missing on too many occasions, roll on the summer! |
